Some of the worlds’ best wines at the best prices come from the Overberg. They also come from Greyton: Andy Mitchell Wines, Lismore Estate Vineyards and, Oewerzicht Cellar (more below).
Wine is made on the vine. The winemaker is the tool to help express wonderful days of sunshine during summer, into a drink you will enjoy year round. In Greyton, our sunlight and summer rain make us well suited to produce magnificent wines of high quality. It really is a sleight of hand that was discovered over 8000 years ago. As winemakers and grape growers we treasure sunny summer afternoons and have hour long conversations about how cold the evening was and how that influences perfect acid development. And then, as fall arrives and we’re still waiting for our crop to ripen we’re hysterical about rain in April and cry over too little rain in February. We hem and haw when discussing the pick and finish by rushing into the vines to test and taste the berries. We have grapes as dream catchers over our heads and attempt to divine the perfect moment for each pick. Then, once the pick is over and the vine has been stripped bare of its long sought fruit, the real work begins. There ends the interplay between climate, land and vine. At this point man takes over and makes magic between grape juice, wood, time and, oxygen.
Greyton’s three cellars are Andy Mitchell Wines on Main Road, Lismore Estate Vineyards on the Sonderend Mountains, and Oewerzicht Cellars off of the road to Krige. Each of us employs different methods for making this wonderful drink, yet all of us use patience and French Oak Barrels to create our wines of character. Oewerzicht Cellar, with its Cabernet Sauvignon. Lismore Estate Vineyards, with its Syrah & Chardonnay. Andy Mitchell Wines, with its Breakfast Rock Syrah & Nerina Rosé. We all use Oak and patience to create wines that you’ll find engaging, magical, delicious and reminiscent of summers past.
Then, when they’re ready, we rush forth our wines with our hearts in every cork you open. The process of making these wines can be as short as two years or as long as seven. We took sunlight from two years ago and made it into a wine you can drink today. The memory of that year lives in every sip you take. We temper our financial expectations and suffer patiently, just to get every drop of perfect African sunlight into your glass.
Next time you’re choosing a wine from Greyton remember that sunlight, passion, patience and love all live within those bottles you peruse.
