Champagne by the River Campsite
Introduction
Champagne is a fruit farm on the banks of the Zonderend River. In 2004 we decided to develop a camp site on the river with its beautiful setting and deep pools. The camp site is right at the circumference of the Mill Stream and Zonderend River with enough fresh water for the whole summer.
Facilities
The sheltered camp site with its green grass is very private and the river is navigable for a few hundred metres. Bring along anything that floats from lilos to canoes. The 10 to 15 stands are level and are ideal for group bookings. The ablutions are basic with two hot showers and a flush toilet. Three electricity points are available, just remember your lead of at least 30 metres!! There are ample braai facilities on site, as well as braai wood – more wood is available on request. Our trees are still very young, so make sure you bring enough umbrellas, gazebos, hats and sunscreen. The summer months can get very hot. The road leading up to the farm is suitable for bakkies and cars, but we do not recommend it for caravans, although the odd caravan enthusiast has paid us a visit!!!
Things to do
Bring your canoe or boat and explore the river. For the keen mountain biker, there are various routes to choose from and there are some veld trails on the farm to explore. Champagne is part of the greater Donkerhoek Conservancy. The fauna and flora on Champagne include antelope, birds along the river and fynbos in Simonskloof. We are 15 minutes from Greyton if you are in need of supplies. Greyton Tourism has info on historic Genadendal (see link on the left) and very good hiking trails, as well as festivals to look forward to.
How to reach us
Take the N2 from Cape Town to just before Caledon, take the Greyton turn-off to your left. After about 20 minutes on this good tar road, look out for the ‘Greyton Frozen Foods’ sign to you left just before you cross the Zonderend River bridge. Turn left on the gravel road. Pass the farms Bakenskloof and Oakdene. The third farm on this road is Champagne. Turn right at the Champagne gate, proceed straight ahead until you reach the river.
